Rainfall and drought

On 5 January the Environment Agency published their most recent Drought Management Briefing

December has been a relatively wet month, with all areas of the UK receiving either average or above average rainfall for the month. This has helped rivers and reservoirs to recover, although there are some parts of the UK (including areas in the Midlands) which are officially in drought due to the longer-term rainfall levels.

To quote from the report:

The central, eastern and southern areas of England had more rainfall in December than in recent months and soils are now wetter. But these areas remain at high risk of drought in spring and summer this year if we do not continue to have prolonged periods of rainfall. “

The rainfall during months up to April will be critical for the continuing replenishment of reservoirs and underground water sources. 2011 started with low levels, which led to a concern about problems occuring over the summer. Waterwise have produced their top 5 tips to saving water for the start of 2012.
